Space-Earth-Man Mosaic

Considering 50 years ago today, Russian Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin (1934-1968) became the first human to journey into outer space, I thought I would put up some mid-century space related pieces.

German artist Otto Schutzmeister (1920-1985) created this double-sided mosaic mural titled Weltall Erde Mensch (Space Earth Man) in 1969. It is located near Wohnkomplex VI (residential complex IV) in Eisenhüttenstadt, Germany. One interesting fact about Schutzmeister is that he lost his arm due to an injury sustained in WWII- I can't imagine building this mosaic with only one hand!  He must have had some help.

I wish I had one of these!
