Bertil Vallien (Wallin) was born in Sollentuna, Sweden in 1938. He studied ceramics under Stig Lindberg at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. He graduated with honors in 1961 and was awarded a Royal Foundation Grant. Later that year, with the funds from the grant, he moved to Los Angeles where he began designing ceramics for Hal Fromhold. On his days off from the Fromhold factory, Bertil crafted his personal work in his own studio. Bertil's first solo show was held at the Ryder Gallery in Los Angeles in 1962. The show was a great success for Bertil; receiving good reviews and selling all forty-some pieces he had exhibited.
Bertil returned to Sweden in 1963 to work for Åfors Glassworks. Though he continued to work in ceramics throughout the 60's, including designing for Rörstrand and Gustavsberg, it was at this point that he began to focus on glass art. Bertil has since become known as one of Sweden's most important glass artists. He continues today to work and live in Sweden. For more info and work by Bertil check here, here and here.
