Roger  Capron was born in Vicennes, a suburb of Paris, France on September 4, 1922.  He attended the School of Applied Arts in Paris from 1939 to 1943. In 1946 he moved to Vallauris, a town historically known for ceramics, where he opened a ceramic workshop known as "l'Atelier Callis" with friends Roger Picault and Jean Derval. But it wasn't until 1952, when Capron purchased an abandoned pottery, that his career gained momentum. His "free-form" style of ceramics, characterized by biomorphic shapes and brightly colored hand-painted glazes, became very popular during the 1950's and 60's.  He even created these pieces for Neiman-Marcus, Gimbels and Saks. Capron was also well known for his abstract ceramic wall panels, tiles and coffee tables. After the Vallauris factory was closed in 1982 following an economic crisis, he continued making one-off studio pieces with his wife Jacotte till his death in 2006.
